Non-approved genetically modified maize in lower saxony

Evidently there has been a contamination of agricultural land in lower saxony by a in Europe non-authorized genetically modified corn. The radio station NDR1 reported that the laboratory of the Ministry of Agriculture in lower saxony found a contamination of seeds with the corn NK603 already in mid-february. But two months passed until the ministry had been informed that it is responsible to inform the farmers. This contamination could mean some damages worth millions of €.

The environmental organization Greenpeace called the sowing of the contaminated maize varieties the largest genetically modified seed scandal in Germany. "The investigation gathered dust for three months on the Lower Saxony authorities desks," said Greenpeace agriculture expert Alexander Hissting. "Either they slobbed (making a poor job) or they wanted to create facts by political conviction."

Greenpeace asked the authorities to reveal the results of the annual seeds under the Environmental Information Act and published. In nine provinces, there were genetically contaminated corn seed. Except for all the countries, Lower Saxony had taken no measures to prevent the sowing, said Greenpeace. 3000 acres were used to seed genetically modified maize by producer Pioneer Hi-Bred - including Lower Saxony, Bavaria and Baden-Wuerttemberg.
