So, after being ill for a week I had a strong urge to play with gadgets. I bought myself an EMTEC N200 media player. I thought it could be convenient to have a player which does FullHD (1080p) over HDMI. I was even more happy when I saw that it could also do SCART as my TV is quite old and I don't want to buy a new one yet. The device has
* HDMI for uncompressed digital audio and video via a single cable
* 2 USB ports
* SD/SDHC/MMC/MS card reader
* WiFi 802.11 b/g/n compatible (optional USB WiFi adaptator)
* Ethernet port (RJ45)
It plays:
* Photo formats : HD JPEG / JPG / BMP
* Video formats : AVI / VOB / ISO / MKV / MOV /MP4 / MPG-TS / WMV / DAT / IFO / RM / RMVB
* Audio formats : MP3 / WMA / OGG / WAV / FLAC
And it is cheap! 99€!
I brought it home and connected it to my network. As I am a security freak I scanned it for open ports. It had an open telnet port. Curious as I am I telnetted to it and tried the usual user/password combinations. "root" with no password logged me in. I was more than happy to see that it runs a Linux. :-) That awakened my curiosity. What does the net say about it? I saw that it is a quite nice platform for video playing. It even has an alternative firmware available as the one from EMTEC is rather crappy. First I tried the one from MVIX USA - no use as the remote key codes got changed. Remote no longer working. And my universal remote from Logitech also did not like/support it. GRR.. Then I tried the one from AC Ryan. That one worked like a charm. The alternative firmware gave me NAS, FTP and a Torrent-client. Nice :-)
So - next time I will buy a device from AC Ryan directly. They understand how open source works.
